Team iPad or team paper?
The materials I use to be a graphic recorder
If you’re curious about becoming a graphic recorder then you might also be curious about the materials I use, so here’s the basics:
For digital work: iPad Pro - Apple Pencil - Procreate app and a handful of ‘brushes’ I’ve been using for years.
For paper work: lots of marker pens (mainly Neuland) - Big paper (sometimes 3m long!) and a steady hand.
The tools matter less than you think. I did one gig with a pile of A4 printer paper and single marker pen (I kid you not). What matters is knowing what to capture, the tool just gets it onto the page. I’ve been doing this for 20 years so I’ve accumulated a lot of kit, but you can start out with very little.
Are you team iPad or team paper?
I really enjoy the convenience of working digitally but I’ll always love the feel of ink on paper.
If you’ve got questions about becoming a graphic recorder then please ask away : )
The new term of my 12 week course Be a Graphic Recorder starts again soon so I’ll share some more info here in the next week incase you’re interested in a new income stream or even a total career switch 🖍

I’m big time team paper 📄 but I’ve started doing some digital recording lately. It’ll take me some time to get used to it, but I love the portability aspect of it and that you can dial into events from just about anywhere!
Big fan of both mediums. For graphic recording, I lean more toward digital; I like the flexibility, which is great for print or when you need it digitally (obviously), like across digital platforms. No longer team Procreate, though; Fresco is my go-to tool now (but in the future I'm looking into drawing directly in either Illustrator or Affinity > I've been practising a lot but there are still some things I like differently).
